Smart Watches – They are the accessory that the tech-geek wants but not too sure about just yet. Many companies that produce them are still working the technical difficulties out such as erratic battery life, random battery death and connectivity issues with the phones that are not a premium Samsung or Apple products. However the Apple and Samsung watches are in fact making significant strides in both addressing these issues and making further advances that place these watches on the fast track to preventative medicine.

Apple has added to these watches an Artificial Intelligence Algorithm called “DeepHeart” which allows the watch to detect abnormal heart rates within 97 percent accuracy. After further tests Apple found that the watch is also capable of detecting Sleep Apnea within 90 percent accuracy and Hypertension within 90 percent accuracy.

Samsung is also working on building more sensors and monitors into their smart-watches that also recognize blood-pressure and hopefully down the road even blood-glucose levels. Samsung has made it clear they wish to see these devices be the “Voice of the Body” as they put it.

Aetna Health Insurance is even leading the charge to provide insurance breaks and premium reductions to clients who actively use and ware Smart Watches that track heart rates and steps-taken. With insurance prices climbing and more companies looking to narrow the costs to their employees this is an excellent step in the right direction. Companies that provide incentives to their employees to eat healthy, work safe and take steps to produce a healthier life-style, have happier demeanors and fewer claims.

In 2018 we have a lot to look forward to with Apple’s Kardiaband and Samsung’s Simband. As we integrate our lives each year with our technology the hope is that (as intended) technology would better our lives and better our health.
