Ever had those times when everyone in your home or business is using the Internet and it seems to be bogging down your movies, online games, or other applications that require Internet connection? In most routers there is software that can help mitigate this problem.
QoS, or Quality of Service, is a method for controlling traffic priority on networks. QoS kicks in when there is a bottleneck and decides which traffic is more important than the rest. The router determines what is more important by setting up rules. These rules determine what type of traffic or what IP address has priority over the rest.

QOS Does not work under some circumstances however. Let's say for instance you have an application or device that requires more bandwidth than you have through your Internet Service Provider (ISP). Setting up QOS is going to do no good as you need more space to push data through.
Let’s say you setup QOS and allot less bandwidth then your ISP provides to your network, you have just created more problems. When you set QOS to low numbers than your ISP’s bandwidth your effectively limiting your Internet connection even more.
If you have a router that allows for more granular changes to QOS then you can make adjustments slowly until everything seems to be flowing properly, even during peak usage times.
If you want to do this on your own, the first step is to run an internet speed test to see what your bandwidth actually is. You can do this at www.speedtest.net. You might also compare the test results to your bill from your ISP. You want to always make sure you’re getting what you’re paying for right?
When QOS is setup, if you have the ability to granularly allocate bandwidth, you should figure 80-85% of your total bandwidth, doing this will allow your Internet connection to fluctuate in speed which it does constantly.
Once you know what the total bandwidth is you can begin to make small adjustments in bandwidth allocation. After every change you are best to leave it for a day or so this will allow you to see how it performs when your network is seeing its highest utilization.
