Money Stolen From Your Business Daily

Did you know chances are if you have employees your business is bleeding money in wasted time? Forbes magazine earlier this year released a report on a recent study saying that on average 64% of employees admit to wasting time at work! If 64% admit it can you image how high that number really is?!?! Of those 64% that admit doing it almost 10% admit they spend up to 10 hours per week doing non work related things online. That a quarter of the week you are paying them for! To put that into perspective, let’s say they were making 40k per year, you just gave them $10k for playing on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, etc. Many businesses have more than one employee, if you had ten employees doing the same thing that's $100k per year lost. What could your business do with $100k? One thing is for sure we don't want our employees wasting time because its costs us money.

Many businesses don't know how to control these issues. This is one of the many things we here at ABC Computer Solutions take very seriously because not only are the websites employees visit a waste of time, but they can also pose a potential risk to your company. Many of the websites employees visit contain malware, viruses, etc. that can slow down their computers or worse yet damage the entire company network depending on how your businesses network is configured. We have several solutions to save your company money by putting your employees back to work and protecting your computers and network by preventing access to these sites in the first place. The first step to addressing this issue is to have an acceptable use policy. This policy should outline what is acceptable use of company computers on company time. It’s also a good idea to address bringing your own device (BYOD) issues as well in this or in the company handbook. Generally speaking there is no reason for an employee to have a personal cell phone on them during work unless under special circumstances (It is just another outlet to wasting time). After employees have read the acceptable use policy make them sign a paper each year stating that they have done so. This alone normally keeps most employees in check. The second step to resolving this problem is to put in place some form of web filtering. This can be accomplished several ways. The first way, which works fine if you only want employees to get to certain sites on the Internet and you only have a few computers, is to have filtering in place at each computer. It is possible in Windows to block all sites except those deemed acceptable by your company. The second way of doing this is by using third party software to block certain types of websites. This is a good solution for small businesses with more than a couple computers that do not want employees browsing the Internet. The final and best solution is to use a firewall on your company network. Having a firewall on your company's network gives your company a lot more control over what is accessible. It allows you to create profiles and exemptions for certain users/computers to allow them access to sites you may not want all employees but want certain employees such as managers to have access to. There are many other benefits to having a firewall as well, so many that we cannot list them all here, many of them don't pertain to this topic but do offer businesses a lot of benefits as well. Businesses have to find ways to keep their employees in check. Being in the IT industry it is easy to learn the different ways employees get around acceptable use and the types of tactics that can be used to restrict time wasting. Don't let your employees fool you, you may be surprised who is wasting time in your organization and how much of it is actually being wasted.
