Facebook, everyone's favorite social media site has just made extremely important changes to privacy settings for teen users. Facebook users ages 13 - 17 now have the ability to post images, posts, etc. to the general public. This is a drastic change to Facebook's previous privacy policy as they only used to allow teens to make posts to Friends giving them some protection from the general public.

What do these new privacy changes mean exactly? Well, since teens are now able to post to the public parents and guardians really need to take extra care in monitoring what their teens are posting online and more importantly, who can see what they are posting. Teens tend to not be as discrete when it comes to what they post and this could put them in harms way when the general public is able to view what they post. We highly recommend monitoring what your children are posting on Facebook as it could put them in harms way without them even realizing it. As Facebook makes policy changes regarding privacy it is very important that parents monitor these changes in order to protect their children. Even more importantly, educate your children about appropriate behavior online and the risks involved in posting things such as private information online. Social media while an excellent way to keep in touch with family can be extremely dangerous if not used in a safe manner. One of the easiest ways of locking down a computer for parents is to have a company that knows what they are doing put restrictions in place on their home networks to block certain websites during certain times of day or altogether. This is definitely something worth considering if you have children at home with a computer that you can't always be home to monitor. There is also software available that allows a parent to login to it and see exactly what has been accessed on the computer and at what time. This is also a great tool when used in conjunction with filters to block access to sites that are not appropriate as it allows you to check periodically to ensure they don't access anything you feel they shouldn't have access to. If they do access something you want blocked you can simply make changes to your filtering policy and block that site as well in the future. Another thing parents can do if they suspect their child is doing things online that are not acceptable is discussing acceptable use with them and consequences of breaking those acceptable use rules, just like most companies have acceptable use policies.
