Ergonomics a Waste of Time?

While it is very common in the work place for employees to mention ergonomics and talk about ways of preventing pain from sitting or standing for prolonged periods of times there is a lot of research that indicates some of these so-called "ergonomic" products are really not as good as they may seem.

Having gone through a recent back surgery due to an old injury I too am constantly looking for new ways to "improve" my desk time. Just like most that work in corporate America I have back pain when sitting for prolonged periods of time, I also occasionally have pain in my hands and wrists from typing too long. While there is research supporting some ergonomic products as being beneficial, the fact is that many ergonomic devices may have not even been tested or evaluated properly.
The biggest problem we have here is that while ergonomic is a term describing something that is designed to minimize discomfort or distress on the body, its not a regulated word. Meaning unlike other terms found in the grocery store such as "low fat", ergonomic can be put on any product a manufacturer wishes without prior approval.
There are many different products that exist to be more ergonomic than traditional products and they may work for some people but the fact is that in most doctors eyes the best thing to do to prevent injuries and pain is to get up and move every once and awhile. Were you aware that sitting all day also decreases metabolism greatly. Constantly sitting or typing for extended periods of time is just not good on the body and should be avoided. While not all ergonomic products work as well as you would expect your best bet would be to try it out yourself if its a chair or desk by checking it out at the local office supply store if possible or if not possible read reviews online. Many websites have large amounts of reviews so make sure you try to read some of the bad ones too just so you can see what everyone's saying about a product before making the decision to spend the money. Don't buy a ergonomic chair just because its $2000 so it has to be good... Visit our website today for more information regarding our services: www.abccsg.com
